- Mechanism: It consists of a valve body, a seat, and a disc (or clapper) attached to a hinge or a shaft.
- Forward Flow: When the fluid flows in the intended direction, the pressure of the fluid pushes the disc open, allowing the fluid to pass through the valve.
- Reverse Flow Prevention: If the flow stops or reverses, the disc automatically swings back to the closed position, seating itself firmly against the valve seat, effectively blocking the reverse flow.
- Unidirectional Flow: The primary purpose is to ensure that the fluid flows only in one direction within the pipeline.
- Automatic Operation: Swing check valves are self-actuating, meaning they operate automatically based on the pressure differential across the valve and don't require any external power source or manual intervention to open or close.
- Full Flow Capacity: When the valve is fully open, the disc moves completely out of the flow path, resulting in minimal pressure drop and allowing for full, unobstructed flow.
- Top-hinged: The most common design where the disc hinges to the inner top of the valve body.
- Tilting Disc: This design allows the valve to open at lower flow rates and close more quickly than the top-hinged type, helping to reduce water hammer.
- Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment: Commonly employed in water pumping and wastewater systems to prevent backflow and protect pumps.
- Petroleum and Chemical Industries: Used in pipelines to manage clean process media, ensuring smooth and reliable flow.
